Russia’s recent and dangerous anti-LGBT laws have led to violent attacks on gay people, many of which have been horrifyingly documented in videos that have been posted and reposted on social media sites. On July 29th, President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning “homosexual propaganda” which criminalizes public expression of support for nontraditional relationships. The vagueness of the term “propaganda” is being taken as a blessing from Putin’s increasingly more dictatorial government to persecute the LGBT community. It also means that any local government has carte blanche to ban gay pride events and people are strongly discouraged to discuss gay rights online and in the media. It gets scarier: a poll by the independent Levada Center in Russia found that 73 percent of respondents supported any government efforts to curb homosexual propaganda. Four out of five Russians say that they do not have a single LGBT acquaintance.
The international community hasn’t done much to stop Putin and Russia and many fear that these laws will balloon and lead to gay genocide. There has been talk about boycotting the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia but nothing has happened. Some bars have boycotted Russian vodka and staged vodka dumps in front of Russian embassies and consulates.
The world must be as vocal as possible – online and in every day life. Christopher Lee Sauvé and artist Tubby Lambergini have created a graphic of Putin, in pink, with lipstick and eye makeup and the words FREE RUSSIA. “I encourage you to take this graphic and create posters, stencils, flags and spread it online,” Sauvé says. He has also set up a shop where you can purchase tee shirts, bags, tank tops, hoodies and posters with all the proceeds going to the The Center, in NYC.
